The Brompton ...

Pubs Adelaide - Your Local, The Brompton

Welcome to our Bar …
An unquestionably friendly place to relax &
A great place to meet

pubs adelaidePubs in Adelaide are known for many things but The Brompton Bar, a part of the old original building, presents the ultimate warm, friendly and engaging local drinking spot.

Deliciously cool in summer and with blazing fires in winter, The Bar is there whenever you feel like just dropping in. Either for just a quick couple of drinks or for an extended afternoon or evening get-together with other locals and friends. For something a little different, The Bar presents a wide variety of boutique beers and speciality wines in addition to all the normal fare found in pubs in Adelaide. Complimentary spring water is always on tap. Plus there’s a marvellous range of fantastic ‘pub grub’ that you can order over the bar and eat right here … including our signature bangers and mash, steak sandwiches, burgers, Coopers Pale Ale battered fish and chips, crumbed calamari, chilli beef nachos, caesar salad, schnitzels, baked potatoes and much, much more. All available from noon to 10pm. Which is not to forget our large screen TVs and Foxtel. After all, what would a true local be without the ability to relaxingly watch the big match with some great company and appropriate refreshments.

"...wide variety of boutique beers and speciality wines"

All of this, and more, in the beautifully renovated surroundings of a classic public house dating from the early 1880s. Which may give you cause to lightly reflect on the Brompton’s history … more history than most pubs in Adelaide...much of which took place in the very spot in which you may be sitting when next you visit. Turning the clock back, we know that the Hotel, as was the custom of the day for licensed premises, included a large room for public meetings. With ours often being used for fiery and rowdy gatherings of a strongly local political nature.

pubs adelaideAs early as 1883, for example, a mayoral campaign meeting at the Hotel was said to have descended into an absolute shambles when a Dr Rees was fiercely shouted down by two opposing candidates who were of a strictly temperance persuasion. Happily the good doctor won and went on to serve several terms with great distinction. But not without The Brompton again being the constant venue for some strong public agitation, lobbying and debate.

Somewhat later, a regular Brompton Hotel customer of record was the bootmaker John Jones who, in 1892, was elected Mayor of Hindmarsh. This was the time when workers had begun to revolt against “bloated capitalists”, and living in a part of the local area inhabited by working folk and many unemployed, John was regarded as somewhat of a champion to their cause. He actively opposed well to do councillors and his meetings were rowdy affairs sometimes interrupted by vigilantes from the Bowden Reform Club. Political stirrings all of which regularly, loudly and sometimes a tad violently spilled over into John’s local watering hole.

The Brompton Brasserie MenuToday, we are happy to report, The Brompton offers you a far more peaceful local. But one that we hope will still remain a distinctive part of the local community.
